How Food Can Improve Teeth Whitening

Discoloration and whitening of the teeth are quite literally like night and day. There are several causes of discoloration, including certain foods or beverages. What you may not know, however, is that other foods or beverages may actually help whiten your teeth. So that you’re not eating the wrong things, there are a few things that are important to know about teeth whitening and food. The types and causes of discoloration, the wrong foods to eat, and the right foods to eat are all really important to know before you begin blindly looking for ways to improve teeth whitening.

Discoloration
There are two major types of discoloration. One is intrinsic staining, or staining that affects the layer just under the enamel. It is typically very difficult to reach and cannot be controlled by using whitening toothpastes or mouth washes. Extrinsic staining is the type that is generally controlled by whitening toothpastes and mouth wash. It is characterized by dirt and debris found in the miniscule cracks and ridges in the teeth. Discoloration can be caused by several things other than certain foods. Tobacco use, poor oral hygiene, and acidic fluids can cause discoloration. Acidic liquids can cause the enamel to be weakened, allowing staining solutions to come through.

Bad Foods
There are several different foods and beverages that are bad to cause food discoloration. These are important to know so that when trying to eat foods that improve teeth whitening you don’t accidentally eat and drink the wrong things. Dark fruit juices and carbonated beverages are as a general rule very bad for staining teeth. Tea and coffee are the most damaging of all beverages for this, however. Acidic foods and beverages weaken the enamel and allow staining products to penetrate deeper into the teeth than would be allowed in those who did not have weak enamel, making them bad for discoloration. Hot and cold fluids are also damaging because they can increase sensitivity and cause discoloration themselves.  And finally, chocolates and other sweets are bad for the tooth discoloration because of the dark dyes that are used to make them and that too much can cause discoloration via harmful bacteria developing. Whiter Smile teeth whitening kits and teeth bleaching gel can help remove and whiten these stains.

Good Foods
Now that you know exactly what foods are bad for the coloring of your teeth, you can find out which foods to go after to improve teeth whitening. Strawberries are one such food. Strawberries have acid and natural sugars, so it is important not to go overboard with them, but using strawberries with baking soda, in their raw form, or even as a tooth rub can be good for whitening your teeth. The inner rind of orange peel can be rubbed on the teeth and gums for whitening effect as well. Apple cider vinegar, though it is slightly acidic, can also be good for improving teeth whitening. When mixed with baking soda, it can make an excellent toothpaste for whitening your teeth. Foods that are naturally fibrous and crunchy like crunchy fruits and vegetables are good for tooth whitening as well.
