The Science Behind ProBiotics
The First Major Breakthrough in Bad Breath Treatment Since TheraBreath The Theory Behind ProBiotics: A Mutually Beneficial Relationship Between Bacteria
These trials have shown that for the majority of sufferers of chronic bad breath tested, use of the TheraBreath Aktiv-K12 System resulted in a significant improvement in breath scores. The 13 subjects in one trial averaged pre-treatment breath readings which placed many of them in the range of bad breath odor being noticeable several feet away. Following use of TheraBreath Aktiv-K12, a week later 11 of the 13 recorded Halimeter scored below the range associated with bad breath even when tested first thing in the morning before any oral care. Eight of these 11 maintained good breath levels when tested first thing in the morning a further week later. The results of this trial were presented at the TheraBreath sponsored International Conference for Breath Odour in London, on 22 April 2004. The Safety of S. Salivarius K12
Overall, it may be concluded that administration of Streptococcus salivarius K12 to humans in the manner proposed is safe for everyone and is unlikely to result in adverse effects of significance. The Ingredients of Aktiv-K12 ProBiotics

Q: Who can use AKTIV K12?
A: AKTIV K12 can be used by nearly everyone: All adults and children 3 years of age and over.
Q: What’s in AKTIV K12?
A: A course of AKTIV K12 consists of 30 doses, each containing the naturally-occurring beneficial oral bacteria, Streptococcus salivarius K12. (Each dose contains no less than one hundred million viable cells). Other ingredients are: Trehalose, Maltodextrin and Peppermint oil. AKTIV K12 is gluten free, lactose and casein free. AKTIV K12 contains no artificial flavours or colours or sucrose. Store below 77oF (25oC) and in a dry place.
Q: Are there any precautions?
A: Only those people suffering from immune compromised conditions or suffering from oral trauma or surgery should seek the advice of their doctor or dentist before taking this product. If symptoms persist, then medical advice should be sought.
Q: Is AKTIV K12 the result of genetic engineering?
A: NO! AKTIV K12 is entirely natural. It is not a manufactured chemical or genetically modified in any way. It contains beneficial bacteria that are naturally carried by as little as 2% of the population. It is a way of passing the benefits of those bacteria to people who do not have them.
Q: How are the bacteria in AKTIV K12 kept alive?
A: The bacteria in AKTIV K12 are freeze dried and then incorporated into a powder format.
Q: Are there any side-effects from using AKTIV K12?
A: Absolutely NOT. After extensive research, there have been no significant side-effects reported. This BLIS-producing strain is a naturally occurring bacterium. It is not a manufactured chemical and it has not been genetically modified in any way.
Q: Are there likely to be any allergic reactions from using AKTIV K12?
A: AKTIV K12 contains no egg products and is gluten free. Similarly people with a dairy intolerance can use AKTIV K12. However, people who are immune compromised should seek the advice of their doctor.
Q: Is AKTIV K12 safe for pregnant and lactating (breast feeding) women?
A: The K12 strain of bacteria occurs naturally in a small percentage of the population. The effect on pregnant and lactating women of AKTIV K12 has not been tested. Pregnant or lactating women should seek the advice of their doctor.
Q: Why is AKTIV K12 not recommended for children under 3 years of age?
A: AKTIV K12 is not recommended for children under 3 years of age simply because young children cannot gargle.
Q: Won’t taking the antibacterial mouthwash on subsequent days kill off the K12 from earlier use?
A: The antibacterial mouthwash will only kill off a small percentage of the oral bacteria. While it does kill off some of the initial K12 on subsequent days, the ongoing process provides a cumulative increase.
Q: What percentage of the population naturally has these strains of bacteria?
A: Most healthy people have Streptococcus salivarius strains in their mouths, however only about 10% of the population have BLIS-producing strains of Streptococcus salivarius. AKTIV K12 contains BLIS-producing Streptococcus salivarius K12 which produces two types of BLIS, Salivaricin A AND Salivaricin B. Strains that produce both these types of BLIS exist naturally in around 2% of the population.
Q: Will taking the mouthwash after a teeth cleaning mean that there is a risk of tooth decay?
A: No. The mouthwash ingredients have been specially selected to be non-cariogenic (will not cause tooth decay).
Q: Why do you need an initial colonization regime followed by a maintenance dose that needs to be repeated?
A: Research has shown that the best result is obtained by first reducing the number of undesirable bacteria with a comprehensive antibacterial regime (AktivOxigen Serum), followed by a short period, high dose course of AKTIV K12 to obtain initial colonization. In order to maintain colonization a maintenance dose should then be taken. Persons with an oral environment not conducive to S. salivarius may need to repeat the full regime more often to ensure high levels of colonization are maintained.
Q: Does AKTIV K12 need to be kept in the refrigerator?
A: No. The product is manufactured in a freeze dried format and therefore does not require refrigeration.
