These bacteria react with an adverse oral environment and create foul-smelling sulfur compounds such as Hydrogen Sulfide (the rotten egg smell) and Methyl Mercaptan (like dirty socks) and even more rare compounds such as cadaverine and putrescin. So one way of stopping bad breath is to neutralize these sulfur compounds - this is especially effective in people with mild-moderate halitosis and can usually be controlled with an oxygenating mouthwash, a non-SLS toothpaste, and a mixture of other oxygenating compounds decided to neutralize the sulfur compounds created by those anaerobic bacteria.
